History in Dates

ČD continues a tradition of railway transport spanning more than 160 years on the territory of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. The historic milestones of its development contain many firsts.

  • 1828 - first horse-drawn railway in Europe: Budweis (České Budějovice) – Linz
  • 1839 - first steam railway on the European continent: Vienna – Lundenburg (Břeclav)
  • 1903 - first standard-gauge electrified line
  • 1918 - establishment of Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD)
  • 1991 - first operation of EuroCity (EC) trains on the ČSD network
  • 1993 - establishment of Czech Railways after the break-up of Czechoslovakia
  • 1993 - launch of modernisation of backbone lines: railway corridors
  • 1994 - first transport of lorries on the Czech railway (“RoLa”): Lovosice – Dresden
  • 2003 - establishment of the company České dráhy, a.s. (ČD)
  • 2004 - realisation of fundamental changes in the interest of effective management of freight transport
  • 2005 - České dráhy, a.s. defends its position among Europe’s 10 largest railway companies
  • 2007 - establishment of the independent subsidiary ČD Cargo, a.s. as the largest railway carrier
