Colourful Graphic Stickers for RegioSpiders in the Vysočina Region

On the second Saturday in June, Vysočina experienced a whirl of colour on the rails.

Pestrobarevné polepy pro RegioSpidery na VysočiněČD Regio-Shuttle RS1 railcars, known under the name RegioSpider, were presented in Havlíčkův Brod in six new, very expressive graphic designs intended to present specific cities in the region. As part of the festivities, three-unit train convoys set out to different parts of Vysočina to show themselves off.

It had not been this festive in Havlíčkův Brod for a long time. This is where on 8 June ČD, in cooperation with Vysočina’s Regional Administration, presented its regional trains with special graphic designs. Six RegioSpiders now operate with graphic motifs and elements linked to a specific city in the Vysočina region. The first three-unit convoy headed to Chotěboř, Bystřice nad Pernštejnem and then on to Velké Meziříčí; the second travelled south to the region’s capital city of Jihlava, and then to Náměšť nad Oslavou and Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou.

The graphic stickers were ordered by cities

The cities themselves ordered and financed the motifs and graphic stickers. For example, the Jihlava unit is intended to evoke a healthy environment in the form of painted silhouettes of trees. Moreover, it promotes the city’s zoo. The Velké Meziříčí graphic stickers, by contrast, promote cycling and skiing. Representatives of Náměšť opted for a large-format photograph of the chateau there with a simple and concise slogan: “It’s nice here; come and have a look.” City representatives also chose the specific units on which their graphic stickers would be applied.

“The graphic stickers themselves, the application of some of which was demanding because they reached around to the side windows, were produced and applied by an external company right here in the depot. The graphics were applied by three or four people, always over a period of a day and a half, explained the head of the Havlíčkův Brod Operational Unit of DKV Brno, Petr Balliš. He added that the only complication was the careful planning of a possible reserve unit, as the graphic stickers were applied to two engines at once. “We have eleven RegioSpider trains on rotation, and any reserve train would have had to be assembled from other locomotive series. Fortunately, this was not necessary.”

Vysočina’s Regional Governor, Jiří Běhounek, who attended the presentation event with his deputy for transport, Libor Joukl, noted that purchasing the new RegioSpiders was no easy task. “We were able to obtain them thanks to ČD and to European funds. These railcars with appropriate graphics will certainly attract the attention of locals and visitors to the region alike. Initially, I wasn’t too fond of the graphic stickers, but I’m pleased with their current form and I appreciate the refined execution,” said Regional Governor Běhounek.

Six ways to celebrate

The governor’s deputy, Libor Joukl, added that the units now served to advertise the region. “One railcar represents some eight to ten mobile billboards. I’m convinced that in due time other cities in the region will join us as well,” he said. The Director of the Regional Centre for Passenger Transport in Jihlava, Lenka Horáková, noted that applying the graphic stickers to the six railcars was one of the most difficult projects from a logistical perspective which they had executed in recent years.

“I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to the project’s execution, which has been rewarded by beautiful graphics and hundreds of joyful people who came out to have a look or take a ride around the region aboard the connected train units. Upon their arrival, each town held its own special programme. In Chotěboř, for example, majorettes and belly dancers performed; in Jihlava, children could have their faces painted by skilled artists, and also dance and compete for prizes from ČD. In Velké Meziříčí, it was possible to ride on a historic draisine. In Bystřice nad Pernštejnem there was a fashion show, and in Náměšť nad Oslavou brass-band music was played,” said Horáková, reflecting on the cheerful Saturday in Vysočina.
