ČD to select a supplier for fast-train carriages

18.4.2016 - 11:54

Czech Railways (ČD) has announced a negotiated procedure with publication to select a supplier for up to 50 comfortable fast-train passenger carriages for international trains travelling at a speed of at least 200 km/h. The carrier wishes to conclude a framework agreement with the supplier and to order individual carriages according to actual need and concluded contracts for provision of transport service.

“Due to the growing number of trains with a maximum speed of 160 km/h or on foreign lines even higher, we will need to supplement our rolling stock in the coming years with additional passenger carriages meeting the highest demands for operating at speeds of at least 200 km/h,” explains ČD Chairman Pavel Krtek, adding: “In order to be prepared for this development, we have decided to announce a tender for the supply of up to 50 such carriages. This will be a framework agreement, under which we will always order only as many carriages as we will need for the connections being prepared.”

ČD plans to deploy these carriages on international EuroCity and InterCity trains, and they are expected to find the greatest application on the Prague – Brno – Bratislava – Budapest line. The carriages will be ordered as open carriages with various configurations, e.g. as 1st or 2nd class carriages, for transporting persons using wheelchairs and with spaces for stowing bicycles.

“The carriages we require must conform to the highest current standards and the configurations of the interiors must comport with our current design manual,” says Michal Štěpán, ČD’s Board Member responsible for passenger transport, describing the carriages. “Therefore, they will of course include air-conditioning, an audio-visual information system with LCD monitors in passenger compartments, retractable tables in seats facing the same direction and larger tables in seats facing one another, and classic electrical sockets as well as USB connectors for charging passengers’ small electronic devices such as laptops and mobile telephones. There will also be a Wi-Fi internet connection available in the carriages,” explains Michal Štěpán.

A matter of course in the carriages’ equipment will also be a closed-system WC and button-operated boarding doors that will be blocked when the train is in motion. Passenger safety will be further enhanced by the ability to block these doors even when the train is stopped, as well as selective unblocking according to the position of the platform.

The estimated value of the framework agreement, including the necessary quantity of spare parts to ensure an exchange system during maintenance and operation, as well as a series of periodic repairs to the carriages after operating for a set number of kilometres, is approximately CZK 175 million.
